Bearberry Creek Erosion Control with Steel Fish Passage Structure
Location - Sundre (Alberta).
Project Description
Bearberry Creek was straightened out a number of years ago within the Town of Sundre just upstream from the confluence with the Red Deer River. Over the years the channel has been degrading back towards an existing grade control structure, which could eventually result in structural failure. Sameng Inc. was retained by Alberta Transportation to design a new steel sheet piling grade control structure located downstream from the existing structure. The design also included modifying an abandoned oxbow so that it could be utilized as a fish passage system for fish to migrate upstream around the new and existing grade control structures.
Services Provided by Consultant :
Reviewed project history and design of existing structure.
Coordinated geotechnical investigation.
Preconstruction surveys required for design.
Hydrological assessment review of flood flows, flows during fish migration, channel velocities and water levels.
Design of a fish migration channel with inlet control gates.
Prepared engineering plans and specifications for construction.
Prepared an engineers cost estimate for construction.

Start-up and Completion Date
The project design started in November, 2001 and a tender package was ready in February, 2002. Construction of the project was put on hold due to budget constraints.
Project Costs
The engineering costs for the design were $ 35,000. Estimated construction costs were $ 760,000 for a new structure with fish way passage and modifications to the existing structure for the provision of a fish way.
