Driftpile First Nation Flood Reduction Project
Location - The project was constructed within the Driftpile First Nation Reserve located on the south shores of the Lesser Slave Lake.
Project Description
The Driftpile First Nation Reserve was experiencing flooding from the Driftpile River approximately once every 3 years on the average. The flooding was causing significant financial losses as well as disruptions to the daily lives of the residents. To this end Samide Engineering Ltd. (Now renamed Sameng inc) was retained in June 1995 to do an engineering design study to alleviate the frequency and severity of the flooding. Samide Engineering Ltd came up with a solution for this project that resulted in the savings of several million dollars over other works that had been proposed over the years. This study:
Determined the flooding processes.
Assessed flood discharges.
Computed flood levels for various flood reduction alternatives.
Dealt with the Environmental concerns in an Environmental Impact assessment.
Developed in detail a flood reduction alternative that consisted of dyking (16 km) along the main river channel with an overland floodwater bypass zone.
Services Provided by Consultant
Preconstruction surveys required for design.
Do soil sampling and soil tests for dike embankment fill borrow areas.
Design local drainage improvements (including culverts with flap gates and/or manual control gates).
Design dykes and bypass zone. This activity would involve inputting the survey data and running backwater curve computer modeling to calculate new water levels.
Preparing design reports and drawings for federal government and for Alberta Water Resource Licensing application.
Preparing an Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Flood Damage Reduction Project.
Public relations with Public, CNR, Provincial Government, Federal Government and Driftpile Band.
Replying to concerns raised as a result of advertising the project.
Preparing tender package.
Construction surveys and project management.
Progress payments.
